An off-duty McCook police officer visiting Harrah’s Casino Joliet last winter ended up slugging a panhandler in the valet area of the gaming facility, in an incident caught on surveillance video recently obtained by the Better Government Association and FOX 32. Wynn Las Vegas has filed a lawsuit against the people involved in a massive brawl that broke out in the Encore over the weekend.
A spokesperson said in an email Friday the suit would come against 'yet-to-be-identified individuals who caused the disturbance.'
'We plan to aggressively pursue legal action against anyone who causes similar disturbances in the future; this is the first and hopefully last,' the spokesperson said.
The now-viral video appears to show a group of people throwing cash into the air on the Encore bar lobby Saturday night. Moments later, chaos ensues.
Wynn previously said the fight involved non-hotel guests, and the company would be beefing up both its security presence and procedures.
Among those changes, the property said it would only admit hotel guests into its towers and would raise hotel rates to pre-pandemic prices.
Now Wynn's lawyers are sending a message that this behavior won't be acceptable, slapping the unknown actors with a lawsuit.
The lawsuit did not mince words:
'Be assured,-Wynn will not sit idly by when anyone engages in mayhem or flouts government-imposed safety measures in violation of Nevada law,' it reads. 'Wynn will aggressively pursue all option to hold these individuals accountable.'
Also adding:
'...Wynn seeks to quash any mistaken belief that Wynn would ever tolerate any intrusion upon the safety and well being of its guests and employees. Wynn will not.'
While the identity of the fighters remains unknown, the lawsuit emphasizes that the company will 'spare no expense or effort' in locating and holding them responsible, stating:
'While their actions may have been isolated and lasted only moments, the damage they caused to Wynn and to the gaming industry still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic is incalculable.'
Local business attorney Jennifer Lloyd with Howard & Howard says she hasn't seen a case like this in the 15 years she's been working in Nevada. She calls it an unusual step during unusual times.

'The message here is we are going to protect our guests, and we are going to enforce our terms of being a casino and we want everyone to know it,' she said.
But Lloyd suggests the lawsuit may be more of a statement than the foundation of a legal precedent in the future.
'How far they are going to take this is hard to say. Especially since I wouldn't imagine they wouldn't recover damage from these individuals. It seems unlikely,' Lloyd said.
